General Information

School Day

8:10 a.m. - 2:50 p.m. Afternoon dismissal will be 2:50 p.m. for all town students. Bus students will be dismissed at 2:45 p.m. Students should not arrive at school before 7:55 a.m. to insure proper supervision.

Anyone visiting our school must stop into our school office to sign in as a guest and receive a visitor's tag to wear while in the building. The tag should be returned to the office at the end of your visit. We want to make sure everyone in our building is identified for the security of our students and staff. This applies to parents bringing in forgotten items for their child, picking up children for appointments, getting messages to your child or your child's teacher, etc. Thank you for your help in this important matter.

Regular attendance is important if your child is to reach a successful level of achievements. Please call 260-665-2014 before 8:30 a.m. each day your child is ill or will be absent.

All medicine to be taken at school must be sent in the original container with a note giving permission to take, amount of dosage, and times the student is to take it. Special permission slips are available in the school office for this purpose.

Hot lunches and breakfast will be available to those who want them. Lunches will be $1.35 per meal including milk. We also have a self-serve salad bar for $1.35 including milk for students 3rd thru 5th grades. For adults who may want to join a student for lunch after making arrangements through the child's teacher, it is $2.00 per lunch. Student breakfast is 85 cents per day with milk or juice; adult breakfast is $1.20. When sending money for the lunch account, checks should be made out to "MSD School Lunch Fund.” No charging will be allowed at any time.

Block Scheduling

Staff members of Carlin Park School researched many elementary daily schedules for the purpose of creating uninterrupted blocks of teaching time, particularly in language arts. After much research and visitations to other schools, our staff piloted a new schedule in 1996-97. This schedule blocked special subject areas such as music, physical education, art, and library times. By doing this, many teachers were allowed more common preparation time than they previously had experienced. We are continuing to research this area. We want to make our progress even better. Having a large block of uninterrupted time for language arts is a positive for our students. This block of instruction allows the classroom teacher to have a segment of time where he/she can meet with all children. Our concern has been that in many schools, the average child is neglected. This will not occur at Carlin Park Elementary.

In addition to these changes, our noon recess takes place before lunch rather than after lunch. We have noticed that children do not rush through their lunches as they did before this change. We will continue to research and plan to provide the best possible educational environment for our students.
